Snorkeling in Koh Tao, straight from the boat

Snorkeling in Koh Tao, straight from the boat

Warm, clear water, quiet bays, and a sailing boat to take you there. No experience needed.

Snorkeling from a sailing boat is a different experience from wading in off the beach. Under sail, SV Freedom Fargo reaches quieter bays away from the busier shore spots, which means clearer water and a more personal time in it. The day keeps a slow rhythm: swim, snorkel, or simply lie on deck between stops, with fruit and water onboard and masks and snorkels provided. No experience is needed, just a love for the ocean.

What you might meet in the water

A green sea turtle swimming over a reef near Koh Tao

Green sea turtles

Koh Tao means Turtle Island, named after the sea turtles that still visit today. They remain a common, joyful sight around the reefs, and swimming above one is often the moment guests talk about all evening.

Blacktip reef sharks

Shark Island, the dive site shaped like a fin, is sometimes home to blacktip reef sharks. Sightings are never guaranteed, so if one glides past below you, count yourself lucky and enjoy it.

Triggerfish

White Rock is a photographer favourite, its rock pinnacles busy with triggerfish and anemone gardens. Watch them from the surface as they patrol their patch of reef.

Groupers and snapper

The reefs around Koh Tao are busy with groupers, snapper and anemone gardens, the everyday company of a snorkel stop here.

Shallow coral gardens

Mango Bay and Japanese Gardens offer gentle slopes and shallow coral, ideal for beginners and relaxed snorkelers who like their reef just below the surface.

Sightings are never guaranteed, that is what makes them special. The crew reads the season and the sea to give you the best chance.
