Freediving Koh Tao Boat Trips: Sailing, Freediving, Snorkelling and Ocean Adventures

Nicola Lacey · 23 March 2026

A boat trip changes everything about freediving in Koh Tao. Instead of crowded shore sites, you reach quiet bays and pinnacles under sail, on your own schedule and at your own pace. Orenda is the only freediving operation on the island that trains regularly from a sailing boat, our 40-foot yacht SV Freedom Fargo.

This guide walks through what a day aboard actually looks like, from setting off to the snorkelling and freediving stops in between, and who each trip is for.

What a day at sea looks like

We meet, load up, and set sail toward sites chosen that morning based on the weather and visibility. There is fruit and water onboard, gear if you need it, and free video footage of your dives. Between freedives you can snorkel, swim, or simply lie on deck and do nothing at all. That mix of focused water time and genuine rest is the whole appeal.

Because we sail rather than run a fast dive boat, the day has a slower rhythm. You are not rushing to fit in tanks before the next group arrives. You are spending the day on the water.

Three trips, matched to where you are

  • Trip A, Exploration (2,500 THB, all levels): relaxed fun dives and snorkelling at beautiful natural sites. Perfect for beginners, snorkelers, and anyone who loves the ocean.
  • Trip B, Coaching (3,500 THB, certified divers): an in-water coaching session with personalised feedback, plus fun dives at prime sites.
  • Trip C, Training (3,000 THB, intermediate and advanced): autonomous training with a safety setup, for divers who have reached 30 m and hold a Level 2 certificate.

No experience is needed for the exploration trip or for our sunset sails. If you can enjoy a day on the water, there is a trip for you.

The sites we may visit

Dive sites are picked daily for safety and the best conditions, but the gulf around Koh Tao is rich. Shark Island is shaped like a fin and sometimes home to blacktip reef sharks and turtles. White Rock is a photographer favourite with triggerfish and anemone gardens. Mango Bay and Japanese Gardens offer gentle, shallow coral perfect for beginners. The Sattakut wreck, a sunken navy vessel, is now an iconic artificial reef.

These day trips offer more than freediving. They are about slowing down, giving you a chance to reconnect to the ocean and yourself.

Why sailing and freediving fit together

Freediving is about calm, breath, and moving with the water rather than against it. A sailing boat carries that same spirit. There is no engine noise for most of the trip, just wind and water, and that quiet sets the tone for the dives. It is also practical: under sail we can reach quieter sites away from the busier shore spots, which means clearer water and a more personal experience.

If you want a gentle introduction to the ocean or focused water time with a coach, a day aboard Freedom Fargo is the best way to experience Koh Tao. Message us with your dates and level, and we will match you to the right trip.
