Freediving Koh Tao: Best Dive Sites, Courses and Complete Guide
Nicola Lacey · 28 May 2019
Koh Tao is one of the most loved freediving destinations in the world, and for good reason: warm, clear water, a huge range of sites, and an easygoing island pace. This complete guide pulls together everything you need to plan a freediving trip here.
Why Koh Tao
Tucked into the Gulf of Thailand just east of Surat Thani, Koh Tao ("Turtle Island") is a serene tropical escape named after the sea turtles that still visit today. The water is warm year-round, visibility is generally excellent, and there is an unusually wide spread of sites within a short distance, from shallow beginner bays to deep pinnacles.
The best dive sites
- Mango Bay and Japanese Gardens: gentle slopes and shallow coral, ideal for beginners and first open-water sessions.
- White Rock and Twin Peaks: rock pinnacles, triggerfish, and great spots for technique work.
- Shark Island: occasionally home to blacktip reef sharks, turtles, and groupers.
- The Sattakut wreck: a sunken navy vessel turned artificial reef, a striking deeper dive.
- Sail Rock, Southwest and Chumphon Pinnacles: the crown jewels of the gulf, with whale shark sightings when conditions align. We reach these on multi-day trips.
Marine life you can meet
Turtles are the island's namesake and a common, joyful sight. Reefs are busy with triggerfish, groupers, snapper, and anemone gardens. On the deeper pinnacles, schools of barracuda and the occasional whale shark are the reward for the trip out.
Lush jungle gives way to coral reefs teeming with marine life, all wrapped in warm, translucent seas.
Courses, from first breath to master
Whether you have never held your breath underwater or you are training for depth, there is a path. Discover Freediving is the gentlest way in, from 3,000 THB. Level 1 earns your first certification (from 7,500 THB). From there you can progress through Level 2, Level 3 and Master, or move toward instructor. Every course runs in small groups, is led by an Instructor Trainer, and includes free underwater video.
Conditions and when to come
Koh Tao is a year-round destination, though sea conditions shift with the seasons, which is exactly why we plan each day around the weather rather than a fixed timetable. The water stays warm enough for comfortable freediving throughout the year. If you have specific dates in mind, message us and we will tell you honestly what to expect.
Whether you are coming for a single Discover session or a full Master course, this is your starting point for freediving Koh Tao. When you are ready, we will get you on the water.
